TL;DR: MCC Round 1 registration for NEET UG 2026 opens around 21 July and choice-locking closes by the end of the month. About 12 lakh qualified candidates are chasing 1,36,939 MBBS seats, and roughly 63,296 of those are government seats. If your score puts you outside realistic government range and private college quotes cross ₹80 lakh, the September intake abroad is running on a parallel clock: Kazakhstan universities mostly close applications around 1 August, Georgia's autumn intake fills through August, and Russian invitation letters take four to eight weeks. You do not have to pick one. Register for MCC, and start the abroad paperwork in the same week.
Every July the same thing happens in Indian households. The NEET result lands, the family does the maths on rank versus seats, and then everyone waits. They wait through Round 1, then Round 2, then the mop-up round, and by the time October arrives and no seat has come through, the September intake abroad has already closed. NEET UG 2026 results came out on 16 July and MCC counselling starts within a week. This guide lays out both calendars side by side so you can run them together instead of losing a year to sequencing.

When does MCC NEET counselling 2026 actually start?
MCC Round 1 registration for NEET UG 2026 is expected to open on 21 July 2026, with choice filling and locking running to roughly 30 July. MCC has not published the final schedule at the time of writing, so treat these as working dates and check mcc.nic.in daily. The full cycle runs four rounds and usually wraps by October.
MCC handles the 15% All India Quota, deemed universities, central universities, ESIC and AFMS seats. Your state's own counselling authority runs the remaining 85% state quota on a separate timeline, and those dates often lag MCC by two to three weeks. Registering for one does not register you for the other. Families lose seats every year assuming MCC covers everything.
A detail worth internalising: seat allotment in Round 1 comes with a commitment. If you are allotted a seat and you join, you are out of the later rounds for upgrades in most categories. If you are allotted and do not report, you can forfeit your security deposit and in some categories get barred from the next round. Read the MCC information bulletin line by line before you lock choices, not after.
How many MBBS seats are there in India for 2026?
The NMC seat matrix for 2026-27 lists 1,36,939 MBBS seats: 63,296 government and 73,643 private. That is 9,911 more seats than last year, with 25 new medical colleges adding capacity, mostly in Rajasthan, Chhattisgarh, Karnataka, Maharashtra, Bihar and Andhra Pradesh. The matrix excludes AIIMS, JIPMER and other Institutes of National Importance, which run their own allotment.
Now the arithmetic that matters. Over 12 lakh candidates qualified. Roughly 63,000 government seats means about one government seat for every 19 qualified candidates. The private seats exist, but at ₹60 lakh to ₹1.2 crore for the degree plus a management or NRI quota premium at many colleges, they are a different financial conversation entirely.
This is why the abroad question is not a consolation prize for weak students. It is a budget decision for mid-range scorers. A student sitting on a score that will not clear government cutoffs but whose family cannot write a ₹1 crore cheque is the exact profile that ends up at a Georgian or Kazakh state university.
What are the MBBS abroad September 2026 intake deadlines?
The autumn intake abroad does not wait for MCC to finish. Here is where the main destinations stand right now.
| Country | Sept 2026 application window | Typical all-in cost (6 yrs) | Latest FMGE pass rate |
| Georgia | Open, fills through August | ₹40–55 lakh | ~35.6% (highest among major destinations) |
| Kazakhstan | Closes around 1 August at most universities | ₹28–38 lakh | ~25–30% |
| Russia | Invitation letters take 4–8 weeks; apply now | ₹19–35 lakh | ~20–25% |
| Uzbekistan | Open till mid-August | ₹25–33 lakh | ~20% |
| Bangladesh | DGHS process, separate merit list | ₹19–33 lakh | ~26.8% |
| Philippines | Open; BS+MD structure, longer route | ₹35–45 lakh | ~20–25% |
Costs are indicative ranges covering tuition, hostel and living, and vary sharply by university and city. Verify current figures with the university directly. Pass rates move each session, so check the latest NBEMS release rather than a consultant's brochure.
The operational point is the lead time. A Russian invitation letter alone can eat six weeks, then you queue for a visa appointment. If you begin that process in mid-October after the mop-up round disappoints you, you are applying for the February intake, not September. That is a five-month gap, and for many students it becomes a full drop year.

Can you run MCC counselling and an abroad application together?
Yes, and it is the sensible play for anyone in the uncertain band. Registering for MCC costs a refundable-ish deposit and some paperwork. Starting an abroad application means submitting documents to a university and, at most, paying a modest application or admission-letter fee. Neither blocks the other until you actually accept a seat and report.
Here is the sequence that works. In the last week of July, register for MCC and for your state counselling, and in parallel send your Class 10 and 12 marksheets, NEET scorecard, passport and photographs to two or three shortlisted foreign universities. Through August, keep participating in MCC rounds while your foreign admission letter and invitation processing runs in the background. If a good Indian seat lands, you withdraw the abroad application and lose only the application fee. If it does not, your visa file is already halfway built.
Two hard prerequisites. Your passport must exist and be valid for the whole course period, so if you do not have one, apply this week. And your documents need apostille or attestation depending on the destination, which itself takes two to three weeks through the MEA process.
Which NEET score ranges should seriously look abroad?
There is no clean cutoff, and anyone who gives you one is guessing. But the practical bands look roughly like this.
If you are comfortably above the range that historically clears government AIQ or state cutoffs in your category and state, run counselling properly and treat abroad as a backup you keep warm, not one you pay for. If you are in the band that clears the qualifying percentile but lands well short of government cutoffs, and private fees are out of reach, start the abroad file now rather than in October. If you are close to the qualifying percentile, abroad is likely your main route to an MBBS this year, and country selection should be driven by FMGE outcomes rather than fee alone.
State quota changes this a lot. A score that is hopeless for AIQ can be workable in your home state's 85% quota, especially in states with newer colleges. Check your state's previous-year closing ranks for your category before you conclude anything.
What NMC rules must you check before applying abroad?
NEET qualification is mandatory for MBBS abroad if you intend to practise in India. No exceptions, no consultant workaround. Beyond that, the NMC Foreign Medical Graduate Licentiate Regulations set conditions your chosen course must meet.
The course must run at least 54 months of academic study plus a 12-month internship, all at the same university. It must be taught fully in English, with bilingual or partly-local-language programmes no longer acceptable. The degree must let you practise in the country where you studied, and the university must be recognised there.
One rule that has caught a lot of students recently: online teaching. NMC's clarificatory notice of 18 March 2026, which replaced and withdrew the earlier 6 March notice, requires that any portion of the course delivered online be compensated with an equivalent period of physical onsite training at the same university. Six months online means six months of onsite compensation, and you need a certificate from the university documenting it. Students from the COVID-era batches in Russia, Bangladesh, Nepal, Georgia, Kyrgyzstan, Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan are the ones most affected. Ask any university you are considering how they document this before you enrol.
What does the abroad route actually cost against an Indian private seat?
| Route | Degree cost | Duration to Indian licence | Extra exam |
| Government seat in India | ₹1–10 lakh | 5.5 years | None |
| Private seat in India | ₹60 lakh–₹1.2 crore | 5.5 years | None |
| Deemed university (India) | ₹80 lakh–₹1.5 crore | 5.5 years | None |
| MBBS abroad | ₹25–55 lakh | 6 years + FMGE prep | FMGE (until NExT) |
The abroad route saves money against private Indian colleges and costs you an exam. That exam is the whole risk. FMGE pass rates hover in the 20–35% band depending on country, and the honest reading is that this reflects both the quality of some institutions and the fact that many students treat six years abroad as a holiday from serious study. Students who prep for FMGE from second year onward clear it at rates far above the headline number. If you are not going to do that, the fee saving is not a saving.
Education loans are available for both routes. Banks fund abroad MBBS for NMC-eligible universities, typically requiring collateral above ₹7.5 lakh, and the TCS on foreign education remittance now sits at a lower rate than it did, which trims the upfront outflow.
What to do this week
Concrete, in order. Check mcc.nic.in and your state counselling site for the confirmed schedule. Register for MCC Round 1 the day it opens and do not wait for the last day, because the portal crawls. Pull your previous-year closing ranks for your category and state so your choice list is grounded in data. Apply for a passport if you do not have one. Shortlist two or three NMC-eligible foreign universities and send documents this week. Start the apostille process in parallel. And check the FMGE pass rate for any country on your list before you check its fee.
Frequently asked questions
Has MCC confirmed the NEET UG 2026 counselling dates?
Not officially at the time of writing. The widely reported working date for Round 1 registration is 21 July 2026, with the round closing around 30 July. MCC publishes the confirmed schedule on mcc.nic.in, and that notice is the only version worth acting on. Check it daily this week.
Can I apply for MBBS abroad while my MCC counselling is still running?
Yes. Applying to a foreign university does not affect your MCC candidature. You only need to withdraw one when you accept and report to a seat under the other. Running both in parallel is the standard approach for students in the uncertain score band, and it costs little beyond application fees.
Is NEET compulsory for MBBS abroad in 2026?
Yes, if you plan to practise in India. NMC requires a valid NEET qualification for eligibility to appear for FMGE and register as a doctor in India. Students who go abroad without NEET can complete the degree but cannot get an Indian licence, which makes the degree largely unusable at home.
What happens if I miss the September 2026 intake abroad?
Most destinations run a February or March intake as well, so you would start about five months later. Georgia, Russia and Uzbekistan all offer winter admissions, usually with fewer seats. It is not a lost year academically, but it does shift your entire timeline including internship and FMGE attempt.
Which country has the best FMGE pass rate?
Georgia currently leads the major destinations at roughly 35.6%, followed by Bangladesh at around 26.8%. Russia, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan and the Philippines cluster in the 20–25% band. These figures shift every session, so pull the latest NBEMS result data before deciding, and remember the number reflects student cohorts as much as institutions.
How much does MBBS abroad cost compared to a private Indian college?
A full MBBS abroad including tuition, hostel and living typically runs ₹25–55 lakh over six years. A private Indian medical seat runs ₹60 lakh to ₹1.2 crore, and deemed universities go higher. The gap is real, but the abroad route adds the FMGE requirement, which is the cost you pay in effort rather than rupees.
Do I need IELTS for MBBS abroad?
Generally no. Most universities in Georgia, Russia, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan and the Philippines admit Indian students to English-medium MBBS programmes without an IELTS score, relying on Class 12 English marks or an internal test. A few universities and some visa categories do ask for it, so confirm with the specific university rather than assuming.
The bottom line
NEET 2026 gave over 12 lakh students a qualification and India has about 63,000 government seats to offer them. That gap is not a personal failure, it is arithmetic. What you control is whether you find out your options in July or in October. MCC Round 1 opens within days and the September intake abroad closes within weeks, and those two facts are why running both tracks together is the only version of this that does not risk a wasted year. Register for counselling, build your choice list from real closing ranks, and start the abroad file in the same week. If the Indian seat comes, you walk away from the second track having lost an application fee. If it does not, you are already six weeks ahead of everyone who waited.
